|Geoffrey Bawa, the great Sri Lankan architect
Bawa was born in Colombo in 1919 to an upper-class family of European descent.
At the age of 19, he studied in England, majoring in English literature and aiming to become a lawyer at one time, but returned to Sri Lanka in 1946 and embarked on a long-term world trip of one and a half years.
Having broadened his horizons, Bawa purchased land in Bentota and tried to create a “utopia,” but he stumbled over his lack of architectural knowledge. He
then returned to England to study architecture and took his first steps as an architect at the age of 38. From
then on, Bawa worked energetically until his death at the age of 84, leaving behind many buildings, from private homes to schools, hotels, temples, and the Parliament Building.
Bawa’s architectural style was also admired by the founder of the famous “Aman Resorts” in Japan, and his style of combining “nature, air, and architecture” still influences many architects today.
|The charm of Bawa’s architecture is not limited to hotels! We also recommend some hidden spots.
In addition to large hotels, you can also visit smaller Bawa buildings such as the Lunuganga Gardens and Brief Garden, which Bawa created as utopias, and the Number 11 Paradise Road Gallery Cafe in Colombo. With
its antique-style stylish interiors and objects with attention to detail, and paintings lining the corridors, you can enjoy your trip as if you were visiting a wonderful art gallery.
