Anuradhapura is the oldest city in Sri Lanka, having flourished as the center of politics and Buddhism for 1,400 years. It is said that Buddhism spread throughout Sri Lanka from here, and the branch of the Bodhi tree where Buddha attained enlightenment is the oldest recorded tree in the world. You can
also see a reclining Buddha inside the Isurumuniya Vihara, which is made of natural rock and is also known as the “Rock Temple.” In addition, the Ruwanweli Saya Stupa in the center of the ruins is one of the three largest brick buildings in the world. The large tower, which is about 70 meters tall, is also a must-see. Sigiriya Rock The huge Sigiriya Rock in Sri Lanka, which is said to be modeled after a lion, still retains traces of Sri Lankan life at that time and murals in various places. Polonnaruwa If you visit Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka for a long time, you should definitely see the Buddha statues. The ruins of Polonnaruwa have a huge Buddha statue in a reclining pose, which is rare in the world. In addition to the usual seated Buddha statues, there are also standing Buddha statues. Dambulla Dambulla is a cave temple that uses a natural cave at the top of a rocky mountain. It is said that the king hid in this cave when he was exiled around the 1st century BC, and later regained his kingship, and built the temple as a token of his gratitude. This temple, the largest in Sri Lanka, consists of five caves, and contains many Buddha statues and murals. As the name “Dambulla: Rock from which water flows” suggests, holy water drips from the ceiling of the second cave, and it is still used during important ceremonies. Kandy The temple in Kandy, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka, houses the tooth of Buddha. See the picture story that was brought from India to Kandy, Sri Lanka after much effort! Also, on the night of the Perahara festival, elephants dressed in gorgeous costumes walk through the city of Kandy.
