|Elephant encounter trip
Let’s ride an elephant
Sri Lanka is renowned for its elephants, so why not enjoy an elephant ride? Sri Lankan elephants are smaller and more gentle than their African counterparts. When you ride atop one and offer it sugarcane by hand, it’s sure to be delighted.
Jeep safari
Sri Lanka has the highest density of Asian elephants per 100 square kilometers, making these magnificent creatures a familiar sight. At Minneriya National Park, you can take a jeep safari to observe elephants roaming freely throughout the park.
During the dry season, from August to December, a unique phenomenon known as the “Elephant Gathering” occurs. Elephants from the surrounding jungles converge at the park’s reservoir, with as many as 500 elephants gathering at the peak of this remarkable event.
Elephant Orphanage This
The renowned elephant orphanage, founded in 1972, is home to nearly 100 elephants, including those rescued from illegal captivity and orphans who lost their parents to poaching. A river runs across a public road from the orphanage, where the elephants are bathed at scheduled times—a remarkable sight as they line up and head toward the water. Visitors can also observe baby elephants being bottle-fed within the facility, offering a heartwarming experience.
